Civil Aviation Resource Network 19 September 2022: The Singapore Airlines Group last week reported its August operating statistics. The data shows that growth has slowed after months of surging monthly passenger traffic.
With the reopening of the Singapore border, demand for domestic and international flights from Singapore has surged, including business and leisure travel in all cabin types. In March 2022, the Singapore Airlines Group carried only about 893,000 passengers, but after the borders opened in April, that number jumped to 1.452 million, a 62.6% increase. In the following months, the number of passengers it carried continued to expand, increasing by 17.4% (May), 13.7% (June), and 7.5% (July).
The SIA Group (Singapore Airlines and Scoot) carried a total of 2.083 million passengers in August, an increase of 110.3% in passenger traffic (measured in available seat kilometers) compared to the same period last year, and a slight increase of 1.1% compared to July; Capacity in August reached 68% of pre-pandemic levels; passenger load factor (PLF) was 85.4%, 2.0 percentage points lower than July and 67.9 percentage points higher than August 2021. The SIA Group posted an operating profit of US$379 million in the first quarter of FY22 (April-June).
Growth does show signs of slowing, although the airline's statement in its operational statistics report highlighted that "the Singapore Airlines Group continues to see strong passenger demand across all route regions". On top of that, SIA may also face constraints on its own resources, namely the ability to operate more aircraft and a shortage of staff.
