Civil Aviation Resources Network, January 23, 2025: According to foreign media reports, Air Canada announced that starting from January 21, all passengers who booked tickets with basic fares but did not pay for pre-selected seats will receive free seat assignments when checking in. In addition, new charges will be introduced for checked baggage on flights between North America and Asia.

Air Canada said that if passengers with basic fares want to change the seats automatically assigned by the system after checking in, they will have to pay a seat change fee. However, for passengers traveling with relatives and friends or who need assistance from others, Air Canada will give priority to arranging companions to sit next to each other in accordance with the current policy.

On the same day, Air Canada also adjusted its checked baggage policy. For passengers who purchase Economy Basic tickets on or after January 21, and take flights between North America and Asia or the South Pacific, checked baggage will be charged according to the new standards, consistent with other international routes: first bag: 75 Canadian dollars/US dollars; second bag: 100 Canadian dollars/US dollars.

Starting January 3, 2025, passengers booking flights within North America or to/from Mexico, Central America or the Caribbean will have to pay an additional fee for carry-on baggage.
