Airbus aircraft 'tow robot' trials accelerate

Civil Aviation Resources Network, July 7, 2025: According to MarketScreener, Airbus announced on July 3 that trials of its 'taxibot', a hybrid electric aircraft tug controlled by a pilot, are accelerating at several major airports around the world.
The device has been deployed at airports such as Amsterdam Schiphol, Paris Charles de Gaulle, Brussels, New York Kennedy and New Delhi, aiming to reduce fuel consumption and emissions during taxiing.
It is designed to tow an aircraft without using the main engine while remaining under cockpit control.
The project is part of the European Heron program, which brings together 24 partners from ten European countries, including Air France, EasyJet, Paris Airports, Brussels Airport and Lufthansa.
The project is expected to be completed by the end of 2025.
Airbus stressed that the modifications required to integrate the 'tow robot' are now certified for the transformation of its single-aisle aircraft.
EasyJet plans to start operating trials at Schiphol Airport in 2025.
According to Airbus, Schiphol Airport, which plans to achieve carbon neutrality by 2030, is an ideal test site because its runway is several kilometers away from the terminal.
