Civil Aviation Resource Network July 25, 2022: Foreign media NBC reported that American Airlines said it may take up to three years to restore full capacity due to a continued shortage of pilots.
American Airlines CEO Robert Isom said demand for air travel is at record levels, but the airline's travel schedule is still affected by supply chain disruptions and staffing shortages that have worsened during the pandemic.
Therefore, he predicts that it will take about a year to restore the capacity of its main routes. "I think it's up to the aircraft manufacturer's supply chain and ultimately the number of pilots to get everything back in sync," he said.
On the other hand, American's regional routes will be more difficult to stabilize. "From a regional perspective, it may take two or three years to get the number of pilots back to normal, or longer," Isom said.
Derek Kerr, American's chief financial officer, said the airline's passenger load in the second quarter of this year was down 8.5 percent from the same period in 2019, even as he saw record passenger numbers. The airline posted its first quarterly profit since the pandemic began, with revenue up 12.2% to $13.4 billion.
