Civil Aviation Resources Network, September 6, 2024: According to Passenger Terminal Today, Athens International Airport (AIA) in Greece has launched an off-airport check-in service for cruise passengers. This service is jointly launched by ground handling operators Swissport Hellas and Skyserv and the Piraeus Port Authority. The off-airport check-in process connects Athens International Airport with the cruise terminal at the Port of Piraeus.
Cruise passenger check-in procedures
With the increasing number of cruise passengers, this service is expected to speed up and simplify airport check-in procedures and improve the experience of cruise passengers. Especially on the day of departure, passengers will be able to take a short trip in Attica or nearby areas.
According to the off-airport check-in procedure, cruise passengers will transfer to the cruise ship directly by bus after arriving in Athens. At the same time, Skyserv and Swissport Hellas will manage the luggage at the same time, and the luggage delivery truck will enter the apron next to the aircraft. Similarly, when leaving the country, cruise passengers will receive a boarding pass when disembarking, which greatly simplifies the departure process. Meanwhile, checked baggage will be transported directly from Piraeus to the airport apron by truck and loaded onto the aircraft after the necessary security checks.
Simplified check-in procedures
Alexios Sioris, Ground Handling and Cargo Development Manager at Athens International Airport, Greece, said: "We are particularly pleased with this new off-site check-in process, which will help relieve congestion at the passenger terminal during peak hours, thereby improving the travel experience for cruise passengers and other travelers."
Yiannis Zermas, General Manager of Swissport Hellas, said: "We use the experience we have accumulated over the years in certain Greek islands to provide services to passengers and manage luggage. This groundbreaking service can successfully solve the problems encountered during peak hours at airports in certain regions."
Nikolaos Grylos, Commercial Director of Skyserv, concluded: "We are very happy to contribute to the realization of this new project. Skyserv has been responsible for ensuring all the necessary approvals from the beginning to meet the needs of check-in procedures at the port of Piraeus."
