Cathay Pacific launched the "Fly to the Blue Sky" carbon offset plan, leading the Asian aviation industry to contribute to sustainable development. The carbon emissions calculator created by the plan will help Cathay Pacific meet its commitment to combat climate change by reaching net zero carbon emissions by 2050.
The new Carbon Emissions Calculator allows customers to calculate the amount of CO2 emissions from shipping and the cost of offsetting them in one simple step. Customers can finance carefully selected carbon offset projects by purchasing carbon offsets. These high-quality carbon offset projects have been certified to the Gold Standard, ensuring that projects can actually reduce carbon emissions while delivering benefits to local communities and development.
Before launching the Carbon Offset Cargo Plan, Cathay Pacific launched the "Corporate Sustainable Jet Fuel Plan" earlier this year, using sustainable jet fuel at Hong Kong International Airport for the first time, allowing participating corporate customers to reduce their business travel or business trips. The carbon footprint of air cargo. Cathay Pacific has earlier pledged to increase the use of sustainable aviation fuel to 10% of its total fuel consumption by 2030, becoming the first airline in the world to make this commitment.
Cathay Pacific Cargo Commercial General Manager Ai Cheuk-yin said: "The Carbon Emissions Calculator is another tool we provide to assist our clients in meeting their sustainability goals, making our business and the airfreight industry more sustainable. The calculator works with us to promote Complementing the use of sustainable aviation fuel, customers have the flexibility to offset their carbon emissions through a range of certified emission reduction programs.”
Customers can use the carbon emission calculator of cathaypacificcargo.com earlier to input the departure and destination airports to estimate the carbon emission of this shipment. Registered customers can now enter the air waybill number on the Cathay Pacific Cargo website, and it can be offset in real time Cargo carbon emissions. Users can enter five air waybill numbers at a time, and there is no limit to the number of applications submitted per month. The calculator uses the latest calculation method from the International Air Transport Association to calculate carbon emissions based on the weight of the shipment and the type of aircraft, and displays the offset amount in local currency.
The technology was developed by Communications Hong Kong Limited, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Cathay Pacific Airways. Its chief executive, Wu Weijie, explained that the core of the plan lies in the meticulous details. He said, "The carbon emissions of booked shipments will vary due to multiple factors. Submission Hong Kong assists Cathay Pacific Cargo to improve its system, using a variety of data sources to calculate the carbon emissions of shipments, including the actual flight route, The aircraft model and the final actual flight distance provide customers with the most accurate amount of credit."
Every time a customer submits an application, they receive a spreadsheet listing the total shipment weight and carbon emissions, as well as the calculated carbon offsets. A monthly statement will also be received afterwards, showing all applications for the past month and the total amount payable. Clients end up receiving a certificate showing the gross sales they paid and projects funded for their company's sustainability audit.
Customer donations will be used to directly fund third-party audited emission reduction projects through carbon credits purchased by Cathay Pacific to offset freight-derived carbon dioxide. Cathay Pacific sells the credits to customers at the original price and takes no profit.
There are currently four funding projects under the project, namely, providing more efficient and cleaner cooking stoves for families in Bangladesh, implementing a solar water heating project in India, setting up a solar cooker project in mainland China, and distributing small biodegraders to local low-income families use.
At the initial stage of the launch of the Carbon Offset Plan freight plan, the carbon emission calculator accepts the air waybill number that has been shipped. We will incorporate the calculator into Cathay Pacific Cargo's digital booking and confirmation platform "Easy Booking" in the long run, so that customers can more easily directly add carbon offsets when booking.
Cathay Pacific Cargo Global Head of Freight Partnerships, Bujason said: “We are excited about leading the industry in Asia to drive sustainable development and look forward to working with our customers to promote sustainable air cargo.
