Singapore Changi Airport is piloting an "Off-Airport Check-In" service, allowing eligible travelers to check in and drop off their luggage at partner hotels in the city, thereby eliminating the need to carry their bags to the airport. The Ministry of Transport stated that this service is one of the new technologies and operational models being tested for Changi Airport's Terminal 5 (T5), with plans for broader implementation once T5 is completed.

On September 23, Mr. Murali Pillai, Senior Minister of State for Transport, revealed that Changi Airport is currently testing services such as off-airport check-in, baggage drop-off, and biometric clearance. These trials aim to validate new technologies and operational processes in preparation for the future launch of Terminal 5.

According to information released by Changi Airport, the off-airport check-in service is currently available to travelers staying at Marina Bay Sands, The Fullerton Hotel, and The Fullerton Bay Hotel who are flying with Singapore Airlines. The service applies to flights departing between 5:00 PM on the day of check-in and 7:00 AM the following day, excluding flights bound for the United States.

Passengers must complete online check-in and register for the off-airport check-in service in advance, then drop off their luggage at the hotel's designated location between 7:00 AM and 11:00 AM on the day of departure. The service provider will then transport the luggage to Changi Airport and deliver it to the corresponding flight. The service currently costs SGD 29 per piece of luggage.

Off-airport check-in allows travelers to complete certain travel formalities within the city, easing the burden of carrying luggage to the airport. After checking in their baggage, travelers can continue their activities at their hotel or in the city, heading directly to the airport before departure to complete the remaining security and immigration procedures.

Changi Airport is currently advancing the implementation of technologies such as self-service check-in, self-service bag drop, and facial and iris recognition. Some travelers are already able to navigate airport processes using biometric technology, reducing the need to present their passports at specific checkpoints. Airport authorities have stated that these services will continue to be adjusted based on trial results.

Singapore's Ministry of Transport has indicated that services like off-airport check-in will be part of the operational design for Terminal 5 (T5). T5 is expected to open in the mid-2030s; once completed, it will have the capacity to handle approximately 50 million passengers annually, further enhancing Changi Airport's overall capacity and operational efficiency.

At present, Changi Airport has not announced a specific timeline for expanding off-airport check-in services to more hotels and airlines. The service is currently being piloted on a limited scale, and eligibility depends on factors such as the traveler's hotel, the airline, the flight schedule, and the destination.
