Starting from July 26, China resumed the 15-day visa-free entry policy for Singapore citizens that was suspended during the epidemic. Xu Fangda, who is visiting China, attended the China-Singapore Chamber of Commerce’s National Day Dinner in Beijing on Saturday (August 19) and said that the Ministry of Transport of Singapore will promote and encourage the opening of more direct flights between Singapore and China, and will cooperate with relevant Chinese departments to discuss how to proceed.

He said: "These measures will definitely promote more face-to-face contacts and strengthen the all-round partnership between Singapore and China."

According to statistics from OAG Aviation Worldwide, a global travel data and analysis company, the number of seats on civil flights from mainland China to Singapore in July has recovered to 73.5% of the July 2019 level.

This is Xu Fangda's first visit to China after the epidemic. He pointed out that the bilateral relations between New Zealand and China have shown resilience under the prolonged epidemic situation. Since the beginning of this year, the two sides have also resumed regular high-level mutual visits.

During Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong's visit to China in March this year, New Zealand and China upgraded their bilateral relations to "an all-round high-quality forward-looking partnership."

Xu Fangda said that China is still an attractive market full of opportunities for many Singapore companies. "In the face of increasing uncertainties in the global economic environment and various economies facing many challenges, the two countries can still emerge from the epidemic and become stronger on the basis of each other's original solid foundation."

Xu Fangda believes that Singapore and China can achieve the above goals by expanding and deepening cooperation in the fields of trade and investment, innovation, digital and green economy.

The eight provincial economic and trade councils between Singapore and China have gradually resumed physical meetings after the epidemic. The Singapore-Zhejiang Economic and Trade Council held its 17th meeting in Singapore on August 15.

"This is critical to boosting confidence and consumer spending, growing the economy and creating jobs; it is also critical to tackling long-term challenges such as climate change and population aging."

Xu Fangda is the co-chairman of the Singapore-Shandong Economic and Trade Council, which will hold a meeting later this year. Xu Fangda will also visit Shandong this time to meet with local officials and visit Singapore companies in Shandong.

More than 600 people attended the China-Singapore Chamber of Commerce's National Day Dinner. Xu Fangda also said in his speech at the scene that overseas Singaporeans have built a solid community during the COVID-19 pandemic in the past few years, united and helped each other.
