The Korean aviation industry believes that the main reason for this phenomenon is the shortage of aircraft maintenance personnel. On August 28, local time, T'way Air just opened the first Incheon-Paris route among Korean low-cost airlines. After the maiden flight, flight TW402 from Paris to Incheon was delayed for more than 21 hours due to mechanical failure. T'way Air said that the company has sent a replacement flight to Paris.
On August 24, local time, Jin Air's flight from Busan to Clark, Philippines took off about 10 hours and 30 minutes later than originally planned. Flight LJ065, which was originally scheduled to fly from Busan Gimhae International Airport to Clark Field, Philippines at 10:10 pm, was found to have a malfunction during the takeoff preparation process, and then the takeoff was interrupted and the aircraft was repaired.
On August 23rd, local time, Korean Air's flight from London, UK to South Korea was delayed for nearly a day. Korean Air KE908 flight, which was originally scheduled to take off from London Heathrow Airport at 7:55 pm on the 23rd, was delayed for more than 23 hours due to the replacement of fuselage parts.
The number of aircraft maintenance personnel has dropped sharply
According to the June Aviation Consumer Report released by the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport of South Korea, as of June this year, 11 Korean airlines reported 126 aircraft failures and defects, an increase of 24.6% over the same period last year. People in the aviation industry said, "As aviation demand increases, flight schedules have become tight, and there is no backup plan even if an aircraft fails, resulting in increased frequency and longer delays. In addition, insufficient increase in operating personnel is also a cause of flight delays."
According to CCTV Finance, data shows that at the end of last year, the total number of maintenance personnel of Korean airlines was 5,627, a decrease of 5.3% compared with 2019 when the maintenance personnel were relatively complete. The number of maintenance personnel of some low-cost airlines has even decreased by more than 25% compared with 2019. This directly leads to a large number of aircraft maintenance and repair work being difficult to complete on time. It is currently the peak tourist season. With the addition of new routes and more flights, the density of domestic and international flights of Korean airlines is increasing, and delays due to mechanical failures are also increasing. Especially compared with large airlines, this problem is particularly prominent in low-cost airlines with smaller fleets and more old models.
In June this year, a flight of low-cost airline T'way Air to Osaka, Japan was delayed for 11 hours due to mechanical failure. Afterwards, 152 passengers collectively filed a lawsuit, demanding a total compensation of more than 90 million won (about 480,000 yuan) from the airline. In mid-August, the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport of South Korea held an emergency aviation safety symposium with the heads of all Korean airlines, urging all airlines to take effective measures to reduce problems such as aircraft failures and long delays. However, the industry believes that the threshold for aircraft maintenance positions is high and the process of personnel replenishment is slow, and it is difficult to completely solve this problem in the short term.
