Civil Aviation Resources Network, November 11, 2024: According to Reuters, the French pilots' union SNPL called for strike action on the 14th to protest the government's proposal to triple the air ticket tax, which is part of a broader plan to fill the gap in France's national budget.
The strike notice involves Air France and other pilots who have signed labor contracts with France. The union said in a statement: "This additional tax will eventually lead to tens of thousands of unemployment in France." The French government proposed to increase aviation taxes on flights to and from France. This move is both to meet the urgent need for increased tax revenue and to achieve environmental protection goals, but it has aroused anger in the aviation industry.
Increasing taxes, especially for long-distance flights, is expected to generate 1 billion euros in additional revenue next year. The measure has been included in the current version of the draft budget through amendments.
