12 August 2022: London's Heathrow Airport said on Thursday that its restrictions on the number of passengers at the airport had eased flight cancellations and lost luggage due to staff shortages, according to abcnews.
The number of travelers has skyrocketed after two years of coronavirus travel restrictions, while airports and airlines have laid off thousands of employees during the pandemic, leaving them overwhelmed by a surge in travel demand.
Heathrow Airport has been plagued with chaos this summer, with long queues at security and a technical glitch in the baggage system, resulting in a large number of unclaimed and lost bags. So Heathrow Airport announced in early July that it would limit the number of departing passengers to 100,000 a day before September 11, and asked airlines to cut flights and stop selling tickets, causing dissatisfaction among a large number of airlines.
In a statement on Thursday, Heathrow said passenger limits had reduced last-minute flight cancellations and improved luggage delivery and flight punctuality. Airport chief executive John Holland Kaye said: "Since the cap was put in place, passengers have enjoyed a better and more reliable journey." Heathrow also said it had employed 1,300 people and that the number of security personnel had reached the level of the pandemic. The previous level is enough to enable 88% of passengers to pass through the security checkpoint within 20 minutes.
