Recently, Shenzhen Airport revealed during the investor online collective reception day event that the three-runway project is planned to be put into operation in early 2026. The airport said that after the project is completed, it will enhance the comprehensive strength of Shenzhen Airport in serving the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area and strongly support the construction of Shenzhen international aviation hub and world-class airport cluster in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area.

The third runway of Shenzhen Airport is located between the second runway and the Yanjiang Expressway. It is set parallel to 550 meters west of the second runway. Construction officially started in March 2020. It is 3,600 meters long and 45 meters wide. The flight area is constructed according to the highest level, 4F, and can take off and land various large passenger aircraft such as A380.

According to the construction unit CCCC Guangzhou Waterway Bureau, the land area formation of the third runway project site and the water bag loading and preloading process of the taxiway area of the soft foundation treatment project have been completed and are in the stage of comprehensive foundation reinforcement.

As a major national project and a key project in Guangdong Province, the Shenzhen Airport's three-runway expansion project will be operated together with the original two runways after completion, greatly improving the airport's passenger and cargo support capabilities and catering to 80 million passengers and 2.6 million tons of cargo each year. Currently, Shenzhen Airport has two parallel runways, located on both sides of the terminal. The first runway was opened when the airport was opened to traffic in 1991, and the second runway was put into operation in 2011. After the third runway is put into use, Shenzhen Airport will conduct maintenance on the first runway that has been in use for more than 30 years.

In addition, Shenzhen Airport also disclosed that the airport is actively promoting the application of new navigation technologies such as RNPAR and GBAS, and the peak hour capacity standard has been approved for 65 flights/hour, which is the highest value for a domestic dual-runway airport.
