The Sunday Times quoted sources as saying that Heathrow Airport Holdings CEO Walderbye has begun to disband the team responsible for the runway expansion project.

Heathrow Holdings denied the report on February 25, saying it had not yet decided whether to build a third runway.

Heathrow is one of Europe's busiest airports, handling 79.2 million passengers last year. According to reports, Heathrow Holdings will explore options to improve runway efficiency, including using more shuttle buses to carry passengers on board.

The company previously said in a statement that they are studying how to optimize the airport to achieve short-term growth targets with existing infrastructure and ensure that the airport has the throughput required by the British economy.

Heathrow Airport currently has two runways, north and south. The Airport Commission formally proposed building a third runway in 2015, but the plan has attracted challenges from local residents and environmentalists, and has been mired in difficulties due to the coronavirus epidemic, and there has been no substantial progress.
