Civil Aviation Resource Network August 1, 2022: According to CNBC reports, pilots of Germany's Lufthansa Airlines voted 97.6% in favor of strike action on Sunday (July 31).
Strikes and staff shortages have forced airlines including Lufthansa to cancel thousands of flights and caused hours-long queues at major European airports, frustrating holidaymakers eager to travel after the easing of coronavirus policies.
Marcel Groels, board member of the pilots union Vereinigung Cockpit (VC), said the vote did not necessarily mean they would go on strike, but it was a warning to airlines that they needed to do something useful. "It shows that we are ready to negotiate."
VC is asking it to give pilots a 5.5% pay rise this year, with automatic inflation compensation thereafter. It also wants a uniform pay structure for all employees of Lufthansa Group airlines, including Lufthansa and Beatwings.
Separately, pilots at Lufthansa-owned Swiss International Air Lines (SWISS) rejected a new contract proposal with 80 percent of the vote, and their union Aeropers said on Sunday it aimed to resume talks with SWISS management as soon as possible. "If management doesn't keep pace with the industry and don't provide an appropriate solution right away, then pilots must make it clearer to management how dissatisfied they are."
A Lufthansa spokesman said they respected the vote and hoped for a constructive solution at the negotiating table.
