On August 19, 2026, Civil Aviation Resource Network reported that the Civil Aviation Authority of Nepal (CAAN) has instructed domestic airlines to operate at least five aircraft by February 2029 (the current minimum requirement is three), or face the risk of having their Airline Operating Certificates (AOCs) revoked.
The CAAN pointed out that operating only one aircraft poses significant safety risks, especially in emergencies where there is a lack of backup aircraft.
Furthermore, airlines with insufficient capital often face financial instability.
The CAAN stated that airlines can choose to expand their fleets or merge with other airlines.
This directive is related to a safety audit initiated by the CAAN two years ago.
In July 2024, a Saurya Airlines CRJ200ER aircraft crashed in Kathmandu. Following this accident, the CAAN launched a safety audit of the country's airlines.
