Civil Aviation Resources Network, October 15, 2024: According to City A.M., the British government announced that it will invest 1.1 billion pounds in a large-scale upgrade of London Stansted Airport. It is reported that the project is expected to create more than 5,000 jobs.
At the International Investment Summit held in London, British Prime Minister Keir Starmer welcomed the proposal to expand the existing terminal of Stansted Airport by one-third. The expansion will allow the northeast London hub to handle about 43 million passengers a year and is expected to double its annual contribution to the UK to 2 billion pounds. The project was granted planning permission in October last year and will begin construction in 2025, and is expected to take two to three years to complete.
The investment includes 600 million pounds for the expansion of the terminal, and another 500 million pounds for improvements to the existing terminal and the wider airport infrastructure. This includes the construction of a 14.3 MW solar farm at Stansted Airport, which is a key part of its decarbonization goals.
Previously, as travel demand recovered, Stansted Airport saw a surge in flights in 2024. The hub had its busiest summer ever between June and August, handling a record 8.8 million passengers.
