Civil Aviation Resources Network, November 22, 2024: According to Simpleflying, Sydney Kingsford Smith Airport (SYD) has announced plans to modernize its T2 domestic terminal, the first major renovation of the airport in more than 30 years. The A$200 million project will include the installation of next-generation scanners, self-service kiosks and new baggage check-in technology.

Sydney Kingsford Smith Airport said the renovation will simplify the experience of 17 million passengers at the domestic T2 terminal, speeding up passenger boarding and security check times through a new layout and the latest technology. The airport said that after the renovation is completed, it is expected that 95% of domestic passengers will reach the boarding gate from the airport entrance within 15 minutes.

Sydney Airport CEO Scott Charlton said: "We are delighted to announce our design vision for the T2 domestic terminal. We believe these changes will make T2 one of the fastest and most efficient terminals in Australia, which is a great outcome for passengers and our aviation partners."

The improvements include a new bag drop facility that will increase the airport's baggage handling capacity from 1,500 pieces per hour to 1,800 pieces by 2026. In addition, the airport will be equipped with new security technology and a state-of-the-art CT scanner that will allow passengers to pass through security without removing liquids and laptops, greatly speeding up queues. The airport estimates that this will more than double the current number of passengers screened per hour from 235 to 500. There are seven lanes in the security area, including dedicated lanes for family members and assistance personnel, and two new elevators have been built after security.

By the end of 2025, the airport will also upgrade the security equipment of its international terminal T1. This will require 15 new security lanes equipped with next-generation scanners, increasing the airport's passenger throughput from 4,500 to 5,850 passengers per hour, a 30% increase.
