At 0:00 on April 7, under the guidance of the Civil Aviation East China Regional Administration, the runway status light system of Hongqiao Airport was officially put into trial operation. The red status lights in the taxiing area guided aircraft to cross the runway in an orderly manner through accurate on-off instructions. This is the first time that the runway status light system has been put into trial operation at a domestic airport.
The runway status light system is like a smart "traffic light" on the runway. The system uses the flight area scene and terminal area traffic situation data to automatically transmit information to pilots and vehicle drivers by turning on and off the lights, accurately and timely informing the runway occupancy status, and assisting air traffic control. The tower guides the aircraft to complete operations such as crossing the runway and taking off. After enabling the runway status light system, the probability of runway intrusion can be reduced by 70%. Combined with traditional air traffic control command, it can achieve double guarantee of airport operation safety.

Hongqiao Airport's runway status light system consists of 22 sets of runway entry lights and 4 sets of takeoff waiting lights. Its operation control program adapts to my country's civil aviation operation requirements and industry standards, filling the gap in the field of domestic navigation lighting intelligent control systems. In 2018, under the unified deployment of the Shanghai Airport Group, Hongqiao Airport started special research and on-site testing of the runway status light system. The formal construction will be launched in September 2022. The main construction of the project and the launch of system debugging will be completed in June and July 2023. The first verification flight was successfully completed in December, making sufficient technical preparations for the system to be put into trial operation as planned.

In order to ensure safety during the trial operation, Hongqiao Airport and the Civil Aviation East China Air Traffic Control Bureau completed the formulation of the status light operation manual, maintenance manual, emergency manual, and key indicators, carried out system safety risk assessment and multiple rounds of emergency drills, and conducted The company carried out the publicity and implementation of status light applications. During the trial operation, the two parties developed a regular operation reporting and summary mechanism, carried out comprehensive operational assessments, and continuously optimized operating parameters, laying a solid foundation for subsequent official use. It also provided guidance for the construction, operation, maintenance, and emergency guidance of the civil aviation runway status light system. It provides Shanghai Airport experience that can be replicated, promoted and used for reference.
