This is the first meeting between the two sides in 10 years. South Korean President Yoon Seok-yue and Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida agreed at the summit a few days ago to try to restore the air routes between the capital circles and localities of the two countries to the pre-epidemic level. This meeting is a follow-up measure. In the memorandum of understanding, the two sides reached a consensus on building a strategic system to strengthen cooperation in six areas including air transport, aviation safety, navigation, environmental protection, airport policy and new technologies.
The field of air transport includes plans to strengthen air connections between the two countries and promote exchanges and cooperation between airports and airlines. Accordingly, the two countries will increase flights from Incheon to Sapporo, Nagoya, and Kansai from July, and re-operate the routes from Cheongju to Kansai, Asahikawa, and Daegu to Sapporo, and strive to reduce the number of flights between the two countries from weekly at the end of last month. More than 890 sorties gradually increased to more than 1,000 sorties after September, returning to 92% of the level in 2019.
