Civil Aviation Resource Network September 19, 2022 News: On September 18, the super typhoon "Nanmadu" landed in Japan, which may be Japan's most destructive typhoon in decades. At present, people in southwestern Japan have been evacuated, heavy rain and strong winds have seriously affected flight safety, and related travel services have been forced to interrupt, and airlines have cancelled some domestic flight services.
It is reported that more than 500 domestic flights in Japan have been cancelled. If the impact of the typhoon does not subside before Tuesday (September 20), the flight disruption time may continue.
Japan Airlines has so far cancelled more than 370 flights on September 19, disrupting the travel of more than 5,000 passengers. The airline has currently cancelled all flights at Kikai, Tokunoshima, Okinoerabu, Yoron, Tarama, OkinawaNaha, Kumejima, NewIshigaki, Amamioshima and Shimojishima airports.
Similar to Japan Airlines, ANA was forced to cancel several flights. Airports affected on September 19 include Noto, Toyama, Komatsu, Hachijojima, NagoyaChubu, OsakaItami, OsakaKansai, Kobe, Tottori, Yonago, HagiIwami, Okayama and Hiroshima airports.
On September 20, flights at Tottori, Yonago, HagiIwami, Okayama, Hiroshima, Iwakuni, YamaguchiUbe, Tokushima, Takamatsu, Kochi, Matsuyama and Hachijojima airports will be severely affected. All Nippon Airways said that many flights from the above airports have been cancelled, and if problems such as low visibility persist, more flights will be cancelled or delayed.
At the same time, other small-scale Japanese airlines have also cancelled some flight services from Monday to Tuesday, mainly to Kyushu and Shikoku regional airports. While the affected flights are usually domestic, mass cancellations and lengthy delays have severely hampered the recovery of Japan's aviation industry.
From October this year to January next year, JAL's international route operation rate was 53% to 55%. With the ongoing typhoon season in Japan, domestic flights are more affected by the weather, and their overall profitability is more negatively affected.
