Two staff members at Frankfurt Airport have died from malaria, according to the Frankfurt City Health Department. The health department believes the malaria-carrying mosquitoes likely entered Germany on an international flight and then spread the disease by biting staff at the airport.
Frankfurt Airport had previously stated that six employees had contracted malaria, one of whom had died. As of Wednesday, the death toll had risen to two.
The Robert Koch Institute (RKI) stated that the most likely source of infection is an imported Anopheles mosquito, which may have entered Germany on an airplane.
Malaria is relatively rare in Germany. The RKI noted that the last airport-related malaria outbreak in Germany occurred in 2023.
The institute stated that because malaria cases are so rare, doctors may not immediately consider the disease, leading to diagnostic delays and increasing the risk of patients developing severe illness.
A spokesperson for Frankfurt Airport stated that the remaining four infected employees are currently receiving treatment in the hospital, and the airport has installed mosquito traps. The captured mosquitoes will be sent to the Antwerp Institute of Tropical Medicine in Belgium for further genetic testing to confirm their origin.
