Civil Aviation Resources Network, May 12, 2025: According to Vietnam News Agency, on May 7, local time, an aircraft at Tan Son Nhat Airport in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam, slid off the runway and hit the runway lights during landing, and two tires were torn in multiple places. It is reported that the flight involved is VietJet Air Flight VJ1149, operated by an A320 (registration number VNA666).
In response to the news that a VietJet Air aircraft was suspected of sliding off the runway and hitting the runway lights during landing at Tan Son Nhat Airport in Ho Chi Minh City, a representative of VietJet Air said in an interview with VNA reporters on the afternoon of the 9th that the flight landed safely under heavy rain and strong winds.
According to the report of the Tan Son Nhat Airport Operation Center, at 17:31 on May 7, 2025, Flight VJ1149 landed on Runway 25R and taxied to parking position 93. The technicians then found that the two tires of the right landing gear had multiple tears, and grass clippings were attached to the tires and landing gear. It was initially judged that the aircraft may have deviated from the runway and collided with the runway lights during landing.
After inspection, it was found that the north runway edge light was broken and the north edge of some concrete sections of the runway was covered with weeds. Runway 25R was suspended at 19:10 to clean up the site and conduct safety inspections, and resumed normal use at 19:45.
At that time, the tower did not receive any abnormal reports from the crew. A representative of VietJet Air said that the flight encountered a sudden crosswind during landing, resulting in unfavorable landing conditions, but the crew operated according to standard procedures to ensure flight safety.
The passengers have successfully entered the terminal, and subsequent technical inspections have not affected the operation of the airport. VietJet Air has reported to the Vietnam Aviation Administration and is cooperating with relevant departments to find out the cause.
The Vietnam Aviation Administration has set up an investigation team and preliminarily assessed the incident as a Class C aviation incident as stipulated in Notice No. 29/2021 of the Ministry of Transport (now the Ministry of Construction).
