Civil Aviation Resource Network August 22, 2022: According to foreign media reports, an Air New Zealand Boeing 777-300 with the registration number ZK-OKQ was flying the NZ-5 flight from Los Angeles, USA to Auckland (New Zealand). Three hours before the scheduled arrival time, the crew decided to lower the plane from 34,000 feet to 27,000 feet to avoid turbulence due to forecast turbulence ahead of the plane's path. During the descent, the passenger's oxygen mask automatically fell off and an automatic emergency notification of a loss of cabin pressure appeared. The plane landed safely on Auckland's runway 05R approximately 3 hours and 20 minutes later.

According to New Zealand media reports, at least two passengers had panic attacks, one of whom collapsed in the aisle and called for medical attention.

Air New Zealand reported that when the crew descended the plane from FL340 to FL270 to avoid the predicted turbulence, passengers' oxygen masks were automatically released and the aircraft's automatic warning sounded, prompting passengers to put on their oxygen masks. Air New Zealand emphasised that the aircraft was not in an emergency and passengers were not required to wear oxygen masks.
