Civil Aviation Resource Network August 22, 2022: The Swiss government has decided to tighten aviation regulations for flights on older aircraft following the crash of the older Junker 52 (Ju-52) four years ago that killed 20 people. The new regulations will no longer allow older aircraft to operate commercial flights, while private flights will only be able to carry up to nine people, with no more than six passengers.
The decision, announced by the Swiss government on August 17, was based on an analysis by the Swiss Federal Office of Civil Aviation. To this end, the Swiss government has revised aviation regulations. The move is to better take into account the risk factors associated with older aircraft, according to a government statement.
The new regulations limit passenger flights to a range common in non-commercial general light aviation, the statement said.
On August 4, 2018, the vintage Junker 52 crashed in the Swiss Alps, killing 20 people: 2 pilots, 1 flight attendant and 17 passengers.
Last year, safety investigators analysed that pilot error caused the accident, the worst air crash in Switzerland since the 2001 crash of a Cross Air flight in Basserford, canton Zurich.
New regulations on older models will come into effect on October 1.
