On April 25, Kunming Changshui International Airport issued a situation report:
From 00:20 to 02:56 on April 25, 2026, Kunming Changshui International Airport experienced severe convective weather, including short-term strong thunderstorms and hail. Aircraft parked at the airport were affected by the hail, resulting in the cancellation or delay of some flights. Kunming Airport, along with airlines and operational support units, immediately initiated emergency response measures.
On-site verification revealed that the extremely large amount of hail within a short period blocked the siphon outlets of the terminal building's roof drainage system, preventing rainwater from draining in time. This caused water to overflow from both sides of the drainage pipes, resulting in water accumulation in some areas of the terminal building. The flooded areas have now been cleared. At the time of the hailstorm, 113 aircraft were parked at Kunming Airport. From an aviation safety perspective, all airlines need to conduct thorough safety assessments to ensure that their aircraft meet safety standards.
Currently, all civil aviation units are working diligently on-site emergency response, prioritizing safety, coordinating efforts from all parties, and responding rapidly. Airlines are coordinating with the Civil Aviation Administration of China to allocate flight capacity and make every effort to ensure the well-being of passengers affected by delayed flights. This extreme weather has significantly impacted the normal operation of flights at Kunming Airport. Showers and thunderstorms are expected to continue from 18:00 to 24:00 on April 25th.
