Civil Aviation Resources Network, August 15, 2025: According to Canadian media reports, as a strike by Air Canada flight attendants approaches, the airline said it expects approximately 500 flight cancellations by the end of Friday. On Wednesday, Air Canada announced flight cancellations for the next three days, with a complete halt to operations on Saturday.
"We deeply regret the union's decision to strike," Air Canada Chief Operating Officer Mark Nasr said Thursday. "This will have a serious impact on our customers, and we will do everything we can to support them."
The operational disruptions for Air Canada and its subsidiary Rouge Airlines could affect approximately 130,000 passengers daily, including 25,000 Canadian citizens returning from abroad.
Air Canada said the suspensions will affect more than 40,000 employees and over 250 aircraft, which fly to 200 destinations in more than 65 countries.
"This is not a system that you can just push a button to start or stop," Nasr said.
Air Canada began suspending flights on Thursday after the union representing 10,000 flight attendants at Air Canada and Rouge Airlines issued a strike notice Wednesday morning. The strike is scheduled to begin after midnight on Saturday.
Air Canada said it will promptly notify customers whose flights have been canceled and will provide a full refund through its website or app. Customers without confirmed flights are advised not to travel to the airport. Nasr said refunds will be processed immediately upon request, but may take up to five days to be credited, depending on the credit card or banking system.
Air Canada said it has reached agreements with other domestic and international airlines to provide customers with alternative travel options and will notify them when these are confirmed.
