On July 17, 2014, MH17 took off from Amsterdam, the capital of the Netherlands, and was scheduled to fly to Kuala Lumpur, the capital of Malaysia, but was hit by a missile over eastern Ukraine, killing all 298 people on board (including 3 babies). The second victim was a Dutch national.
In November, a Dutch court convicted two former Russian intelligence officers and a Ukrainian separatist in absentia for their roles in the incident and sentenced them to life in prison.
Penny Wong said the sanctions were against Sergey Dubinskiy and Leonid Kharchenko, who were convicted by a Dutch court last year, and the Russian colonel Sergey Muchkaev, who directed the delivery of Army brigade shooting down airliner missile system.
Penny Wong said Australia had previously sanctioned another man involved in the case, Igor Girkin, for supporting separatist activities in eastern Ukraine in 2014.
Penny Wong said: "These sanctions demonstrate the Australian government's continued commitment to holding accountable those responsible for the downing of Flight MH17. "Australia is unwavering in its commitment to truth, justice and accountability for the victims of the downing of Flight MH17."
