Bloomberg: Chinese tourists remain wary of outbound travel
Civil Aviation Resource Network News on April 28, 2023: According to Bloomberg News, on the eve of China's "May 1st" holiday, more than half of Chinese tourists said that they have not made any plans to travel abroad this year, and 31% said they do not plan to travel abroad at all. The return of Chinese outbound tourists is crucial to the recovery of the global tourism industry, which contributed US$253 billion to the global economy in 2019.

Dragon Trail International, a travel technology and digital marketing company serving the travel industry, conducted a survey of 1,012 mainland Chinese tourists from 49 cities ahead of China's May 5 holiday peak. Only 10% of Chinese respondents said they have already booked an outbound trip for 2023, and about half expect to book an international trip before the end of this year. Security concerns outside of China now top the list of factors when considering travel, overriding economic considerations and the availability of time to travel.
According to booking data released by global travel analysis company ForwardKeys on Wednesday, Macau and Jakarta are the Asian destinations with the largest recovery compared with 2019 for mainland tourists traveling abroad during the May Day holiday this year. The top two bookings charts are Cairo and Dubai.
Although uncertain factors related to outbound travel plans for 2023 still exist, Chinese tourists' enthusiasm for world exploration and interest in group travel is still high. Among the respondents who said they might or would definitely travel abroad this year, nearly 75% said they would choose Asian destinations, followed by Europe, and nearly two-thirds of the respondents said they were more inclined to book travel packages that included all expenses.
