Civil Aviation Resources Network, July 4, 2024: On July 4, local time, a chemical leak occurred at an aircraft engineering facility at Kuala Lumpur International Airport in Malaysia.

According to Reuters, the Selangor Fire Department issued a statement on Thursday (July 4) saying that the authorities received a report at 11:23 in the morning that 20 people had dizziness and were sent to the hospital for treatment. They were all airport staff.

According to the latest news, local rescuers said that 39 people have experienced dizziness and nausea. Among them, 24 people have been discharged from the hospital, 14 are receiving care at the Aviation Accident Center, and 1 person is hospitalized.

Rescuers said that the leaked chemical was methyl mercaptan, and the source was an abandoned fuel tank. The source of the leak has been blocked and the tank will be dismantled later.

Methyl mercaptan is an organic sulfur compound with a strong odor, often used as an odorizer for liquefied petroleum gas to detect leaks.

A spokesman for the Fire Department said that airport operations were not interrupted and there was no threat to public safety.

The on-site commander, Muhammad Nor Khairy, said the incident occurred at the Sepang Aircraft Engineering Company in the southern area of Kuala Lumpur International Airport.
