U.S. Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy announced that the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) will issue a new mandatory Operational Specification (OpSpec) requiring all commercial airlines to formally commit to merit-based pilot recruitment.

Duffy stated, "When passengers board a plane, they should have confidence in the flight because they know the pilots are the best. The public doesn't care about a pilot's appearance or gender-they only care if the pilot is the most qualified person for the job. Safety is the cornerstone of everything we do, and this reasonable measure will increase transparency between passengers and airlines."

FAA Administrator Brian Bedford stated, "Passenger safety is the FAA's top priority. Hiring the most qualified people is the most basic requirement for airlines, because pilots are responsible for the lives of hundreds of people. A person's race, gender, or religion has absolutely nothing to do with their ability to safely fly and land an aircraft."

American Airlines (A4A) expressed its support for this initiative. "A4A members comply with all federal regulations and laws, including those related to qualifications, training, and licensing."
