Ethiopian Airlines has placed a firm order for eight Boeing 777-8 freighters and two 777 freighters to expand its cargo fleet and international route network. The airline has become the first in Africa to purchase the 777X freighter.

Ethiopian Airlines had previously ordered eight Boeing 777-9 passenger aircraft; this latest acquisition doubles its total orders for the 777X family to 16 aircraft. Neither delivery dates nor the contract value were disclosed.

Currently, Ethiopian Airlines Cargo serves over 70 destinations across Africa, Asia, Europe, the Middle East, and North America. Its all-cargo fleet comprises 12 Boeing 777 freighters, two 767 freighters, and four converted 737-800SF freighters.
