The opening ceremony of Hong Kong International Airport's new Terminal 2 was held on May 22. The departure facilities at Terminal 2 will open on May 27, 2026, and passenger check-in services for 15 airlines will be moved to Terminal 2 from that date.
Hong Kong Airport Authority Chairman Lam Tin-fuk said, "The opening of Terminal 2 is another milestone in the development of Hong Kong International Airport. Positioned for leisure and tourism, Terminal 2 is designed with efficiency and passenger comfort as priorities. We have paid attention to every detail, extensively applying technology to provide efficient self-service check-in, self-service baggage drop-off, and a smooth departure process. We believe Terminal 2 will be very popular with passengers, especially younger travelers. Its bright and airy interior space, featuring a sleek and flowing design, will make Terminal 2 a timeless building. The dynamic 3D content displayed on the digital screens around the building creates a pleasant atmosphere for passengers before they embark on their journey."
Terminal 2 covers an area of 300,000 square meters and its design and facilities can serve both departing and arriving passengers. The departure facilities of Terminal 2 will open on May 27, while the arrival facilities are expected to be operational next year, depending on passenger demand.
Terminal 2's departure hall features eight check-in lanes (P to W), providing 68 express baggage drop-off counters, 58 self-service check-in kiosks, and 108 mixed check-in kiosks. All self-service baggage drop-off and mixed check-in kiosks utilize a low-floor design for easy baggage placement on the conveyor belt. The restricted area entrance has 20 self-service security gates, all equipped with facial recognition technology. In conjunction with Terminal 2's opening on May 27, the minimum age for using facial recognition technology at the self-service security gates in Terminals 1 and 2 will be lowered from 11 to 7 years old.
All 15 smart security checkpoints within the restricted area of Terminal 2 allow passengers to avoid removing laptops and liquids smaller than 100ml from their carry-on luggage during security checks. The Immigration Department has 35 e-lanes and 60 counters for departing passengers.
Several large digital screens of different shapes and sizes are located on different floors of Terminal 2, featuring 3D content and ocean-themed videos to create a vibrant atmosphere.
The food court in the departure hall has eight dining facilities, four of which are open 24 hours a day; there are also 12 shops offering a variety of goods, including travel essentials and souvenirs.
