Indian antitrust agency approves merger of Vistara and Air India

Civil Aviation Resource Network, September 3, 2023: According to Reuters, India's antitrust agency approved the merger of Tata Group's Air India (Air India) and sister airline Vistara on September 1, provided that both parties must Keep voluntary commitments.

Tata said in November last year that it would merge its two full-service airlines Air India and Vistara. Vistara is a joint venture between Tata and Singapore Airlines.

Sources previously told Reuters that the Competition Commission of India (CCI) had said that on certain routes and categories, such as business class travel, the merged entity could have a monopoly, raising competition concerns.

Reuters reported last month that Air India Chief Executive Campbell Wilson had held talks with India's antitrust chief about the merger. A few weeks ago, India's antitrust authorities expressed concerns about Air India's possible market dominance.

The regulator approved the proposed deal "provided the parties abide by their voluntary commitments", without elaborating on the voluntary commitments made by the airlines.
