Civil Aviation Resources Network, July 21, 2025: According to Reuters, Alaska Airlines said on Sunday (July 20) that it had grounded all flights due to an IT failure in the system. Alaska Airlines did not specify the specific nature of the failure. This is the second time it has grounded all flights in more than a year.

In an email statement to Reuters on Sunday evening, Alaska Airlines said: "At about 8 pm Pacific Time on Sunday (0300 GMT on Monday), Alaska Airlines encountered an IT failure that affected flight operations. We have applied for a temporary system-wide grounding of Alaska Airlines and Horizon Air flights."

The Seattle-based airline said that operations would continue to be affected that night, but did not provide further details.

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) status page shows that the grounding of Alaska Airlines' mainline aircraft and the suspension of Horizon Airlines operations have affected all destinations.

In April 2024, Alaska Airlines was completely grounded due to problems with the aircraft load balance calculation system.

According to its website, Alaska Airlines Group currently operates 238 Boeing 737 aircraft and 87 Embraer 175 aircraft.

In June, Hawaiian Airlines, a subsidiary of the group, said some of its IT systems were hacked. Alaska Airlines Group said it was still assessing the financial impact of the incident.

The news of Alaska Airlines' IT failure came at a time when technology companies Google and Palo Alto Networks warned that the "Scattered Spider" hacker group was targeting the aviation industry.

Canada's WestJet Airlines suffered an unknown cyber attack in June, and Australia's Qantas also suffered a data breach in July, in which the personal information of millions of customers was obtained by hackers.

It is not clear whether the Alaska Airlines failure is related to the "active attack" on server software used by government agencies and enterprises that Microsoft said on Sunday.
