JAL and KDDI conduct drone delivery demonstration flight in Tokyo
According to Japan's Kyodo News Agency, Japan Airlines and KDDI will conduct a one-month demonstration test in Tokyo from February 1, using small drones that are remotely controlled to fly automatically to deliver medical supplies. Prior to this, a demonstration flight was shown to the media on January 25. According to Japan's revised "Aviation Law" implemented in December last year, the "Level 4" that allows drones to fly automatically in "manned areas" without visual inspection has been lifted. Relevant units strive to realize it as soon as possible. Demonstration tests are carried out in the capital.
In the test, the drone will send the test samples from the hospital in Akiruno City, Tokyo to the testing institution about 120 meters away. Visual monitoring is implemented during the flight, with a maximum of 5 round trips per day. The planned investigation focuses on the operation management of non-visual flights and changes in detection samples. The "PF2-LTE" produced by ACSL, which is engaged in the domestic industrial drone business in Japan, is used. In the demonstration flight, the drone took off from the hospital, flew at a height of about 40 meters and a speed of 10 meters per second for about 2 minutes, and then landed in an elementary school about 800 meters away.
Masafumi Hirono, president of KDDI SmartDrone, said: "In the future, drone flights in Tokyo will probably increase. I hope that through empirical experiments, operational problems will emerge."
