According to Business Insider, Lufthansa is asking passengers to turn off AirTags placed in their luggage.

AirTag is an electronic tracking device launched by Apple, which is used to locate and find specific items of users. German media WirtschaftsWoche reported in August that Lufthansa regards AirTag as an electronic device like a mobile phone and a laptop, saying that it is a "Dangerous Goods," requiring its batteries to be removed before flight. This will make it impossible for passengers to locate checked bags during the trip.

A Lufthansa spokesperson said: "AirTags are portable electronic devices and are therefore subject to the International Civil Aviation Organization's regulations for the carriage of dangerous goods by aircraft. Therefore, due to its transmission and positioning capabilities, AirTags, if placed in checked baggage, are not in flight. The process must be similar to mobile phones, laptops, tablets, etc., and remain closed.”

A spokesman for Berlin Brandenburg Airport said in a statement that the airport does not ban AirTags and does not routinely remove them from luggage. But he added that the airport adheres to each of its airlines' guidelines, advising passengers not to use AirTag in their luggage on Lufthansa flights. "Normally, we check and process luggage according to the airline's requirements."
