Civil Aviation Resources Network, December 02, 2024: According to Reuters, Malaysia's Minister of Plantation and Commodities Johari Abdul Ghani said last week that Malaysia plans to start producing sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) in 2027 with an initial production capacity of 1 million metric tons per year. The Malaysian Minister of Plantation and Commodities told Parliament that production capacity will be gradually increased based on factory output and feedstock availability.

The minister said that Malaysia is the world's second-largest palm oil producer, and under the government's National Energy Transformation Roadmap released in 2023, the government has set SAF blending requirements, aiming to reach a 47% blending ratio by 2050.

Ghani added that EcoCeres Renewable Fuels Sdn Bhd and Petronas will work with Enilive and Euglena to build a SAF refinery and production plant with an annual production capacity of 350,000 metric tons and 650,000 metric tons, respectively. "With the development of these two plants, we will have the capacity to produce one million metric tons of SAF," and any remaining production can be exported to other countries that do not produce SAF. He said the government is also considering offering various tax incentives to attract investors to Malaysia and make the country a SAF development hub.

The Civil Aviation Authority of Singapore previously said that from 2026, flights departing from Singapore will be required to use sustainable aviation fuel (SAF), with the goal of increasing SAF use to 1% of total fuel, and plans to increase the proportion to 3%-5% by 2030.
