Civil Aviation Resources Network, December 27, 2024: According to The Indian Express, the Indian Civil Aviation Security Bureau recently proposed new restrictions on hand luggage on flights, a major reform aimed at simplifying air travel and strengthening security. Whether traveling domestically or internationally in India, passengers are only allowed to carry one handbag or carry-on luggage on board. India implemented this reform to strengthen security and effectively manage the growing passenger demand at domestic and foreign airports.
In view of the increase in the frequency of air travel, in order to improve airport operations and reduce traffic congestion during security checks, the Indian Civil Aviation Security Bureau and the Central Industrial Security Force decided to implement stricter hand luggage restrictions.
The new restrictions prohibit passengers from carrying more than one piece of luggage into the cabin, and other luggage must be checked in. Airlines such as Indigo Airlines and Air India have updated their baggage policies to meet the new requirements.
What are the new hand/cabin baggage regulations?

1. According to the new regulations, passengers can only carry one carry-on bag weighing no more than 7 kg, and all excess baggage must be checked in;
2. The size of a carry-on bag must not exceed 55 cm in height, 40 cm in length, and 20 cm in width;
3. If a passenger's carry-on baggage exceeds the weight or size limit, excess baggage fees may be charged;
4. Passengers who have purchased tickets before May 4, 2024 are not affected by the new weight limit, which was 8 kg for economy class, 10 kg for premium economy class, and 12 kg for first class and business class.
