On October 25 (local time), a power failure at London Stansted Airport in the UK temporarily affected several airport systems. Security screening and baggage handling operations were disrupted, leading to long queues of passengers and delays to flight operations.
According to Sky News, flight data indicates that approximately 250 flights were delayed and 6 were cancelled that day. Some passengers reported long queues at airport security and immigration checkpoints, with wait times exceeding 90 minutes.
Airport: All systems back online
A spokesperson for Stansted Airport stated that a power surge, which affected the airport and the surrounding area earlier in the day, caused temporary disruptions to several airport systems. The airport confirmed that all systems are now fully operational, and staff are assisting passengers with their travel processes. The airport also apologized for the inconvenience caused to passengers during the period of system disruption.
In addition, the airport's internal shuttle service was suspended that day due to a technical malfunction; the airport deployed alternative buses to transport passengers between the terminals and the boarding gates.
Passengers expressed dissatisfaction with the airport's emergency arrangements.
Some travelers spent over an hour in security queues, with wait times reportedly reaching as long as two hours. As the security screening process stalled, passengers-anxious about missing their flights-found it difficult to obtain clear, timely updates on their flight status.
Families with young children and elderly passengers were particularly affected, struggling to find seating, drinking water, or food while waiting in line. Although some airlines delayed departures to accommodate delayed passengers, some flights still departed with empty or partially empty seats because passengers were unable to clear security in time.
Combined Storm Impacts Disrupt Travel
The power issues occurred while the UK was being affected by Storm Boelo. Earlier, fallen trees in parts of Essex damaged overhead power lines, which also disrupted rail services to and from the airport.
As of the evening of the 25th (local time), the airport reported that its systems had been restored; however, the lingering effects-including ongoing flight delays-will take some time to fully resolve.
