On February 19, 2026, Civil Aviation Resource Network reported that, according to ABC News, a JetBlue Airways flight was forced to return to Newark Liberty International Airport in New Jersey on Wednesday (February 18) due to an engine malfunction. Passengers were evacuated via slides. Airport operations were temporarily suspended.
The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey stated in a statement that JetBlue Flight 543 departed Newark for West Palm Beach at approximately 5:45 p.m. but immediately returned to the airport due to an engine malfunction.
According to the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), after the aircraft landed and taxied off the runway, the crew of the Airbus A320 reported smoke in the cockpit and immediately evacuated passengers via slides.
The FAA stated that the aircraft landed safely and no one was injured.
Airport operations were temporarily suspended while the aircraft was being removed from the taxiway.
According to the FAA and the Port Authority, the airport has now reopened.
