On February 19, 2026, Civil Aviation Resource Network reported that Japan's Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism announced on Wednesday that, given recent incidents of power banks catching fire on flights, it has notified airlines that the use of power banks on airplanes will be prohibited starting in April.
Sources indicate that the ban extends beyond simply using power banks to charge smartphones; it also includes charging via in-flight power outlets.
Since July of last year, the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism has repeatedly urged passengers not to store power banks in overhead bins and to keep them within easy reach during flights. This latest decision strengthens these controls.
According to the Ministry, the lithium-ion batteries commonly used in power banks can ignite when subjected to physical impact or due to performance degradation.
Currently, power banks are prohibited in checked baggage, and there are also restrictions on the number and capacity that can be carried on board.
In January 2025, a fire occurred on a Busan Air flight, believed to have been caused by a malfunctioning power bank.
