Civil Aviation Resources Network, July 2, 2025: According to Passenger Terminal Today, the Airports Company of South Africa (ACSA) recently announced that it will implement an infrastructure maintenance and capital expansion plan costing approximately US$1.3 billion across the nine airports it manages across the country.

The plan covers a wide range of projects, including HVAC system upgrades, terminal roof waterproofing projects, sprinkler fire extinguishing systems, runway airside renovations, etc., aimed at improving airport operation safety and passenger comfort. In addition, the Airports Company of South Africa will also renovate its fuel system and fire protection infrastructure to ensure the safety and stable operation of key systems.

The infrastructure upgrade plan focuses on key operating areas, with the aim of modernizing facilities, improving operational resilience, and preparing for future growth. In addition, the Airports Company of South Africa has launched boarding bridge renovation and replacement projects at multiple locations, including structural repairs, control system and canopy upgrades, and several important nodes are scheduled to be completed between November 2025 and 2026. To improve the reliability of energy supply, the Airports Company of South Africa will also replace the uninterruptible power supply system in stages, which is expected to be completed in 2026.

In response to the long-standing operational efficiency issues, Airports South Africa is continuing to promote the replacement and renovation of elevators and escalators, some of which have been installed, and the entire plan is expected to be completed in 2027. At the same time, Airports South Africa will also replace the instrument landing system and automatic meteorological observation system to improve flight safety and comply with regulatory standards. Most of the related projects will be completed by the end of 2026.

According to Airports South Africa, the national maintenance plan gives priority to infrastructure with greater impact, such as sewage systems, public toilets and fire escapes. Relevant areas will also implement stricter safety and hygiene measures to improve the user experience and safety standards in high-traffic and sensitive areas.

At Johannesburg International Airport, a phased renovation project for public toilets is also underway, covering men's and women's toilets, baby care rooms and barrier-free facilities. The project, which began in December 2024 and is expected to be completed in December 2025, aims to improve the comfort and hygiene level of passengers.

At a meeting with airline representatives, Mpumi Mpofu, CEO of South African Airports, said that most of the projects currently underway are expected to be completed between the end of 2025 and 2027.
