Southwest Airlines to end free checked baggage policy

Civil Aviation Resources Network, March 12, 2025: According to Reuters, Southwest Airlines announced on Tuesday that it will charge some passengers for checked baggage, ending its long-standing free checked baggage policy. This is another major policy adjustment for the airline. Last year, the company announced that it would end its open seat policy that had been in place for more than 50 years.
Southwest Airlines announced that it will charge some passengers for the first and second checked bags starting May 28. Under the new policy, Southwest Airlines will still provide two free checked bags for the highest level of frequent travelers (A-List Preferred) and passengers who purchase the most expensive fares. Lower-level loyalty members (A-List) can check one bag for free, and passengers holding Southwest Airlines co-branded credit cards can also get the benefit of a free checked bag. Passengers who do not meet the free baggage conditions will need to pay for the first and second checked bags.
According to reports, Southwest Airlines CEO Bob Jordan is trying to increase Southwest Airlines' operating profit margin from 2% last year to 10% in 2027 by cutting costs and increasing revenue.
