Swiss International Air Lines cancels 1,400 flights due to severe pilot shortage

Civil Aviation Resources Network, May 19, 2025: According to Travel And Tour World, Swiss International Airlines recently announced that it will cancel about 1,400 flights between April and October 2025. This adjustment accounts for about 1.5% of its total summer flights.
The flight cancellation will affect a number of European short-haul and medium-haul routes, especially the Zurich-Chicago route, which will reduce its flights by half from September to October 2025.
Swiss International Airlines pointed out that the flight adjustment was not caused by a single factor, but the result of multiple operational and manpower problems, especially the severe shortage of pilot resources. Although attempts have been made to ease the pressure by introducing leased aircraft and seeking assistance from its parent company Lufthansa, external resources have been basically exhausted, so the overall operation can only be ensured by reducing the number of flights.
Swiss International Airlines emphasized that the flight adjustment is aimed at avoiding sudden temporary cancellations, providing passengers with more predictable itineraries, and promised to continue to work hard to optimize training progress and resource allocation to restore normal flight operations.
