Civil Aviation Resources Network, September 3, 2025: American Airlines recently took delivery of its 1,000th mainline aircraft, a brand new Boeing 787-9 equipped with American's latest business class cabin. Since April, American has received eight 787-9s, bringing its total order to 30.
To celebrate this milestone, American Airlines also released several key fleet details:
- American's fleet growth in 2023 and 2024 is expected to be very limited: 965 aircraft by the end of 2023 and 977 by the end of 2024.
- American Airlines expects to have a fleet of 1,014 aircraft by the end of 2025, primarily driven by the addition of the Airbus A321XLR, Boeing 787-9, and Boeing 737 MAX 8.
- These figures do not include American's extensive regional jet fleet, which exceeds 500 aircraft.
-American Airlines currently has over 400 undelivered mainline and regional aircraft on order. However, as older models are gradually retired, these new aircraft will not only be used to expand the fleet, but also to achieve fleet renewal.
Fleet Size Comparison of the Three Major US Airlines
In early 2025, United Airlines received its 1,000th aircraft, surpassing American Airlines to become the world's largest airline by fleet size. This means United reached the 1,000-aircraft milestone several months earlier than American. United has been experiencing significant growth in recent years, with no signs of stopping. It is foreseeable that United will maintain its leading position in fleet size.
As for Delta Air Lines, it is only slightly behind American Airlines in terms of mainline fleet size. Currently, Delta has 990 aircraft and is expected to cross the 1,000-aircraft mark soon.
