1. WestJet Orders 67 Boeing Aircraft

Canadian low-cost airline WestJet announced on Wednesday that it has placed its largest order in Boeing's history. As part of WestJet's expansion strategy, it has reached an agreement with Boeing for 67 aircraft, with deliveries continuing through 2034. The order includes 60 737-10 MAX narrow-body aircraft and seven 787-9 wide-body aircraft. WestJet plans to double its capacity by the mid-2030s.

2. Finnair Considers Ordering Up to 30 Airbus Narrow-Body Aircraft

Finnair said on Wednesday it is considering a batch of Airbus narrow-body aircraft, potentially up to 30. Finnair has 80 aircraft in its fleet, including 15 older aircraft that the airline is preparing to replace. Finnair CEO Turkka Kuusisto said he didn't know which aircraft the company would choose, but that a decision would be made by the end of the year.

3. Ryanair Cuts Spanish Capacity Due to "Excessive" Airport Fee Increases

Due to a planned 6.6% fee increase by Spanish airport operator Aena, Ryanair will reduce its winter capacity in Spain and close its Santiago base. Specifically, Ryanair's capacity in Spain will be cut by 41% and in the Canary Islands by 10%, resulting in a loss of over one million seats and the cancellation of 36 regional routes.

4. Air New Zealand 787 Flying to Perth Returns to Auckland Due to Technical Issue

On Wednesday, an Air New Zealand flight from Auckland to Perth returned shortly after takeoff. The Boeing 787-9 (flight number NZ175) took off around noon but returned about an hour into the flight. Air New Zealand confirmed the decision to return was due to a technical issue that required evaluation by engineers in Auckland. 5. British Airways flight to Toronto returns to Heathrow due to oxygen system malfunction

On September 3rd, British Airways flight BA99 (a Boeing 777-200) from London Heathrow to Toronto aborted its climb at 15,000 feet due to an oxygen system malfunction. Out of an abundance of caution, the crew decided to return to Heathrow.

6. Qantas to Focus on Ultra-Long-Range Flights in 2026

Qantas is further expanding its presence in the ultra-long-haul market, with capacity on its 16-hour Perth-Rome route set to increase by nearly 50% in 2026. The airline plans to extend the seasonal route by eight weeks and increase the weekly frequency from three to four during the peak summer season.

7. Japanese startup airline JCAS Airways postpones its maiden flight to the second half of 2026

Japanese startup airline JCAS Airways recently announced that its maiden flight has been postponed from the first half of 2026 to the second half of 2026 due to production delays for its first aircraft, an ATR 72-600. While JCAS Airways awaits aircraft delivery, crew training and safety procedures remain a top priority.
