To enhance its capacity for cross-border passenger transfers and further optimize the travel experience for transit passengers, Haikou Meilan International Airport (hereinafter referred to as Meilan Airport), under Hainan Holdings, launched the expansion and renovation project of its Terminal 2 international transit area on April 10, 2026. On August 14, the project successfully passed the civil aviation industry's acceptance inspection and entered the preparation stage for operation.
The renovation project focused on redesigning the flow of international transit passengers. Before the renovation, international passengers transiting through Haikou and international passengers transiting through Haikou who had completed through check-in at the departure station all processed their procedures in the international transit area on the second floor of Terminal 2. After the renovation, the international transit area on the second floor of Terminal 2 is dedicated to international passengers transiting through Haikou who have completed through check-in. For international passengers transiting through Haikou to domestic destinations, regardless of whether they have completed through check-in, all will be processed in the international arrivals hall on the first floor of Terminal 2, achieving separate passenger flow.

In conjunction with the renovation plan for this project, Meilan Airport has built four new security checkpoints in the international arrivals hall on the first floor of Terminal 2, adding 162 square meters of waiting area. It has also added a baggage check-in service room and a check-in counter. Passengers transferring from international to domestic flights via Haikou who have not completed through check-in can collect their baggage and complete secondary check-in and check-in on-site without having to carry their luggage to the departure hall on the third floor, making transit travel more efficient.

During the acceptance process, the expert group, through on-site inspections, equipment verification, process simulations, and document review, determined that the project's construction quality met standards, its facilities were fully functional, and its operational procedures were standardized. It satisfied civil aviation operational standards and passenger transfer support needs, and possessed the conditions for routine and large-scale operation. The expert group unanimously agreed to pass this civil aviation industry acceptance.
After this expansion and renovation, the international transfer passenger handling capacity of Meilan Airport's Terminal 2 will be effectively improved. Once officially operational, Meilan Airport will be able to handle a peak hourly passenger volume of 480 people transferring from international airports via Haikou to domestic airports, providing a more convenient and smoother transfer service experience for inbound and outbound passengers traveling to and from Hainan, and contributing to the high-level opening-up of the Hainan Free Trade Port.
