News from Civil Aviation Resource Network on November 26, 2022: On November 25, 2022, the third runway of Hong Kong International Airport (Hong Kong International Airport) was officially opened, marking an important milestone in the expansion of the airport into a three-runway system. According to the Hong Kong Airport Authority, since the third runway was put into trial operation on July 8, 11,000 flights have taken off and off. Since November, an average of about 140 flights have taken off and off every day, and the operation is smooth.


The opening ceremony was held at the new airport central control center. Officiating guests included Chen Guoji, Chief Secretary for Administration of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region Government, Yin Zonghua, Deputy Director of the Liaison Office of the Central People's Government in the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region, Pan Yundong, Deputy Commissioner of the Office of the Commissioner of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the People's Republic of China in the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region, and So Zeguang, Chairman of the Hong Kong Airport Authority , the Secretary for Transport and Logistics, Lam Sai Hung, and the Chief Executive of the Airport Authority, Lam Tien Fook.


Chen Guoji, Chief Secretary for Administration of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region Government, said: "The development of the three-runway system will greatly increase the passenger and cargo capacity of Hong Kong International Airport. The status of the hub will better align with the macro strategy of the country’s “Outline of the 14th Five-Year Plan” and the “Outline of the Development Plan for the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area.”


So Zeguang, Chairman of the Hong Kong Airport Authority, said: "The three-runway system project started in 2016. During the period, many difficulties and challenges have been overcome. The new runway has been put into operation in July this year and is progressing smoothly. I would like to sincerely thank all colleagues in Hong Kong Airport for their hard work. To be enterprising is not only to complete the new runway and add new impetus to economic growth, but also to actively build the airport city to become a new landmark and create miracles in adversity."


Song Zhiyong, director of the Civil Aviation Administration of China, delivered a congratulatory speech through the video. Other guests attending the ceremony included the Secretary for Financial Services and the Treasury, Mr Hui Chengyu, the Secretary for Security, Mr Tang Ping-keung, other government officials, members of the AA Board of Directors, business leaders, representatives of local airlines and major airport companies, etc.


The construction of the three-runway system started in August 2016. The land reclamation project of 650 hectares (approximately 34 Victoria Parks) took about four years to complete. The runway with a total length of 3,800 meters has been put into service in July 2022. Other projects include the expansion of the No. 2 passenger terminal building, the construction of the T2 passenger corridor, The new people mover and baggage handling system will be completed on time and on budget by 2024.
