On December 13, 2025, Civil Aviation Resource Network reported that the passenger throughput of Hainan Island's three major airports is expected to exceed 50 million for the first time in 2025, setting a new historical record.

At a special press conference on the achievements of Hainan Province's transportation development and reform during the 14th Five-Year Plan period on December 12, Yang Xiaobin, member of the Party Committee and President of Hainan Airport Group Co., Ltd., introduced the achievements of Hainan's aviation industry.

During the 14th Five-Year Plan period, Hainan Province continued to improve the "service capacity" of its airports. Following the overall layout of the Hainan Free Trade Port airport cluster construction-"one main airport, one secondary airport, two feeder airports, and one cargo airport"-the province completed the renovation of the international transit area at Haikou Meilan Airport, shortening passenger transit distance by nearly half and significantly improving the capacity to handle international transit passengers. With the commissioning of the third phase of the Sanya Phoenix and Qionghai Bo'ao airports, the three airports on the island will have the capacity to handle 68 million passengers annually. The total passenger throughput of the island is expected to exceed 50 million for the first time this year, setting a new historical record; the passenger throughput of international routes is expected to exceed 2.4 million for the year, a year-on-year increase of 30%, ranking among the top in the country in terms of growth rate.

Hainan Province is continuously expanding and optimizing its air network. It is expanding intercontinental and other medium- and long-haul routes, increasing the proportion of medium- and long-haul routes operated by wide-body aircraft from 10% to 20% by 2025, significantly improving connectivity between Hainan and Europe, Oceania, and the Middle East. Fifth freedom passenger and cargo routes, representing the highest level of airspace openness for a country and region, achieved a breakthrough during the 14th Five-Year Plan period, with 7 routes operational by 2025. Hainan's international transit routes have increased significantly, forming a new model of domestic and international intermodal transport. The frequency and density of flights to international and regional hubs such as Hong Kong, Singapore, and Thailand are continuously increasing, greatly improving international transit connectivity. This year, the number of international passenger routes will exceed 90, reaching 42 cities in 21 countries and regions worldwide, including Hong Kong and Macau, forming a "two-ocean hub" pattern that basically covers RCEP countries and connects regions along the Belt and Road Initiative.

Striving to create a safe and convenient travel experience. Hainan Airport, in collaboration with more than 20 civil aviation units including air traffic control and airlines, established a regional civil aviation operations coordination committee. It actively integrated into the three-tiered collaborative operation system of "national-regional-airport" and systematically integrated flight operation resources across the island. During peak travel periods such as the Spring Festival and major events, as well as extreme weather conditions such as thunderstorms and typhoons, it achieved centralized consultation, unified allocation and coordination of airspace resources. As a result, the flight regularity rate has increased significantly from 84.96% at the beginning of the "14th Five-Year Plan" period to 92.53%.
