According to British media reports, Coventry Airport in the UK will close this year, with the UK Civil Aviation Authority confirming that the airport will cease operations in June 2026. Many local residents have expressed their opinions on the closure, reflecting on the airport's long history and discussing the potential impact on local businesses and the wider community.
Businesses within the airport have been told they must relocate by May 2026. A spokesperson for the UK Civil Aviation Authority stated: "Coventry Airport has formally notified us of its planned permanent closure from 11 June 2026."
Coventry Airport was originally built in 1936 as Buckington Airport and served as the Royal Air Force's Buckington base during World War II. For many years, it was used for cargo, small aircraft, and intermittent commercial flights.

One local resident said, "All those complaining about the airport closing are probably the same people who opposed using it for holiday flights a few years ago. Or maybe they're the ones who moved to Buckington and are now complaining about the noise!"
Another resident said, "An airport is an airport, and it will always be an airport. Another part of our history is going to disappear. Let it stay as it is and attract more airlines."
Yet another resident said, "My memories of the airport will always be the air show every August, with Spitfires, Lancasters, Harriers, and Mirage fighters performing. Goodbye, Buckington Airport."
